CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURE - Highways Freeways & Roads

In Western Australia, isolation and distance between cities and towns demand an extensive and efficient system of roads.

Airey Taylor Consulting has extensive experience in major highway design experience and has been engaged by the Main Roads Western Australia to design and document major road projects throughout the State.

West Coast Highway Extension - Rochdale Road to Helston Ave, Perth (above right).

This commission comprised design and documentation of a new major link road of 2.4 kilometres single carriageway joining Servetus Street, Swanbourne, with West Coast Highway, City Beach, adjacent to the SAS Rifle Range and Cottesloe Golf Club. Client: Main Roads of Western Australia.

Stirling Highway Southern Extension, Bridge and St Peter Road Underpass (left).
Southern approach from Stirling Highway to High Street. This system is part of the Eastern Bypass road system for the city of Fremantle, and includes a dual carriageway road and a traffic bridge over a new local road with a separate new pedestrian underpass. Client: Main Roads Western Australia.

Reid Highway
12 kilometres of dual carriageway limited access highway from Mirrabooka Avenue to Beechboro Road, Malaga. This project was the first section of the Northern Perimeter Highway linking the northern industrial areas of Perth to the Roe Highway. Client: Main Roads Western Australia.

Ludlow Bypass Road and three bridges - Vasse, Western Australia.

This project in the South West Region of Western Australia involved the design and documentation for 18 kilometres of dual carriageway to form portion of the Bunbury to Augusta main route. Three bridges over the Sabine, Abba and Ludlow Rivers were also designed and documented. Client: Main Roads Western Australia.

Northern City Bypass (Graham Farmer Tunnel). Airey Taylor Consulting was commissioned by Main Roads Western Australia and the East Perth Redevelopment Authority to determine the final route through the East Perth Precinct to link the Hamilton Interchange of the Mitchell Freeway to Great Eastern Highway, Perth. The project involved alternate routes and horizontal profiles with differing interchange configurations. Traffic studies and environmental assessment were also performed.

Kwinana Freeway Stage 6. 12 kilometres of limited access dual carriage way, including the ultimate Kwinana Freeway geometrics, drainage, five grade separated interchanges, dual use paths and noise bunds. The design of this first stage construction for the Main Roads Western Australia comprised integrated at-grade intersections, landscaping and street lighting to suit the ultimate design.

Graham Farmer Bypass Tunnel: Airey Taylor Consulting was invited by the Thiess Transfield Consortium to provide tender design for costing on this $200 million project comprising 1.7kms of tunnel through inner city areas. The tunnel design comprised topside down construction with diaphragm walls and pile anchored floor, with post tensioned and reinforced roof. The approach interchange incorporated two traffic bridges which were super elevated and geometrically curved cloverleaf design. Also included were pedestrian underpass and pedestrian bridge over the tunnel approach lanes. This advanced design was intended for a "build and maintain" contract.

West Coast Highway - Servetus St (left). 2.0km dual carriageway road extension of West Coast Highway through Swanbourne This link between West Coast Highway and Curtin Avenue is part of the upgrade to provide a future direct link to North Fremantle. Client: Main Roads Western Australia.

Category Winner of the MBA Excellence in Construction Awards 2000

Soil-nailed retaining walls to a depth of six metres also formed part of the project.
