A highly
imaginative structural response met the challenge of this architectural
design with its unconventional lines and forms, multifaceted roofs and
curving walls.
 |
- spans of 36 metres across the expanse of indoor space were
provided by a roof structure with sole column and two metre deep
truss.
- innovative structural design was required for the unusual
suspended mezzanine floor slabs.
- suspended plant rooms to house air conditioning, pool plant
and concrete chambers were designed to accommodate large air
blowers to generate the special wave action required.

St Mary’s Indoor Recreation
and Aquatic Centre - Council of Penrith, NSW.
This project, representing an optimal mix of old and new, called for redevelopment of the
existing outdoor swimming pool. The structural design adopted allowed full
development of the architectural expression for large, open,
visually unimpeded space, while catering to the functionality of
facilities within a chemically hostile environment.
The project was completed in 1995. |
Airey Taylor Consulting
provided Structural, Civil & Geotechnical Engineering Services to

Fremantle Aquatic Centre
This project called for
refurbishment and enclosure of the existing pool, including a new
playground pool and an upgrade of pool hydraulics.
The naturally
lit, open plan enclosure captures an outdoor feeling with trees and
lawns retained for recreational use and the toddlers’ play area.
The enclosure features lattice steel framework with translucent
sheeting and multicoloured panels representing sails. Since these
modifications, this centre has become a highly popular and
commercially viable leisure centre, servicing the Town of Fremantle
and surrounding suburbs. |

Milne Bay Memorial Aquatic
Centre - Toowoomba
This project was a pioneer
within the highly specialised field of
"wave pool" design and was one of the
first of its type in Australia. The main pool
features 8 swim lanes at the deep end with
adjacent shelving beach and toddlers’ wading
pool. This advanced engineering design was
completed in 1996.
