RECREATION CENTRES - Aquatic Centres

We have comprehensive experience in the design of major outdoor and indoor sporting and recreational facilities across Australia, some of which have won awards for their innovative design and commercially viable resolution.

Bayswater Aquatic Centre – Western Australia
This exciting project was awarded Category Winner in Division 3 of the 1999 MBA Awards for Excellence. Architect: Donovan Payne Architects Pty Ltd.

  • unique "wave pool".
  • 25m and 50m learn-to swim program pools.
  • large family leisure lagoon.
  • children’s water slide.
  • spa, sauna and gymnasium.
  • spectator seating overlooking auditorium.
  • indoor multipurpose areas.
  • restaurant and function lounge.
  • whole complex linked to existing outdoor pools.
  • extensive landscaping.

A highly imaginative structural response met the challenge of this architectural design with its unconventional lines and forms, multifaceted roofs and curving walls.

  • spans of 36 metres across the expanse of indoor space were provided by a roof structure with sole column and two metre deep truss.
  • innovative structural design was required for the unusual suspended mezzanine floor slabs.
  • suspended plant rooms to house air conditioning, pool plant and concrete chambers were designed to accommodate large air blowers to generate the special wave action required.

Waratah Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre - Shire of Sutherland, NSW. (below)
This centre demonstrates the value of advanced aquatic and structural design, and has become a major attraction for the region, exceeding all usage and income projections.

  • 25m and 50m pools
  • a learn-to-swim pool
  • large family leisure lagoon
  • spa and sauna
  • spectator seating
  • linked to outdoor pools
  • extensively landscaped.
  • indoor sports hall
  • health centre
  • function lounge.

St Mary’s Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre - Council of Penrith, NSW.
This project, representing an optimal mix of old and new, called for redevelopment of the existing outdoor swimming pool. The structural design adopted allowed full development of the architectural expression for large, open, visually unimpeded space, while catering to the functionality of facilities within a chemically hostile environment.
The project was completed in 1995.

Airey Taylor Consulting provided Structural, Civil & Geotechnical Engineering Services to Architect: Barry Hall & Associates on this $4.7M project. This project established new benchmarks for excellence in municipal design throughout Australia, winning the NSW 1995 MBA Award for Project Excellence.

Bibra Lake Adventure World - Perth, WA (right)
This highly popular aquatic centre has developed into a major recreational and tourist attraction in Perth, providing numerous water activities for enjoyment of all concerned.

Sophisticated pool design and hydraulics were designed by Airey Taylor Consulting for this centre, which represents one of the largest areas of treated water in Australia.

Architect: Hobbs Winning & Leighton.

Wanneroo Waterworld - one of Perth’s earliest pool recreation centres.

Shire of Carnamah - 25m pool.

Beatty Park and Bold Park Aquatic Centres - City of Perth. Major feasibility studies have been performed for both centres.

City of Rockingham and for the City of Melville. Significant swimming pool repair programs have been designed and implemented for these Local Authorities.

Bond Residence, Dalkeith. (right)
In 1990, this project was recipient of the National Spa and Pool Institute of Australia, Gold National Award, and International Pool of the Year.

It comprises a 25m lap swimming and entertainment pool, with extensively landscaped gardens, waterfalls and nature areas.

The project represents one of the many successful structural designs for domestic pools undertaken by Airey Taylor Consulting throughout Australia.

Fremantle Aquatic Centre
This project called for refurbishment and enclosure of the existing pool, including a new playground pool and an upgrade of pool hydraulics.

The naturally lit, open plan enclosure captures an outdoor feeling with trees and lawns retained for recreational use and the toddlers’ play area. The enclosure features lattice steel framework with translucent sheeting and multicoloured panels representing sails. Since these modifications, this centre has become a highly popular and commercially viable leisure centre, servicing the Town of Fremantle and surrounding suburbs.

Milne Bay Memorial Aquatic Centre -
Toowoomba

This project was a pioneer within the highly specialised field of "wave pool" design and was one of the first of its type in Australia. The main pool features 8 swim lanes at the deep end with adjacent shelving beach and toddlers’ wading pool. This advanced engineering design was completed in 1996.
